“If you can see the future, you can save it.”
The tagline for the movie, “Next” sets up the premise.
Las Vegas magician Cris Johnson (played by Nicolas Cage) has the gift of being able to see two minutes into the future. Though the gift has some benefits, it also torments him.
Cris is sick of all the examination and interest by the government and hospitals that he went through when he was younger. So now he lays low in Las Vegas under an alias and makes a living as a magician and small time gambler.
When a nuclear device disappears and a terrorist group threatens to detonate it in Los Angeles, FBI agent Callie Ferris (Julianne Moore) goes after Cris to try to convince him to help.
However, Chris is extremely reluctant as he is busy waiting for his dreamgirl. At one point, he saw further into the future and saw his future girlfriend (Jessica Biel). Because he knows the location of their meeting, everyday he goes there and waits thinking she will walk into his life.
The movie met with mixed reviews. Many thought the storyline didn’t make much sense, but some found that the action sequences were enjoyable. Though it may not have been worth the price at the theater, it’s definitely worth checking out when the DVD is released on September 25, 2007.
The movie is directed by Lee Tamahori (Die Another Day, XXX: State of the Union).
